TMS Therapy for Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is one of a few treatments designed to help fight depression without drugs. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to accurately target and stimulate key areas of the brain that control the patient’s mood, pain, or cravings. This stimulation has been demonstrated to increase activity and blood flow in targeted areas.

TMS treatments last about 30 minutes and are recommended to be given five days a week for 1.5–2 months. This new treatment option can potentially provide better symptom relief without the side effects sometimes associated with medication. Patients are able to work, go to school, or continue any of their daily activities.

For most, depressive symptoms decrease significantly after 6 weeks of treatment with TMS therapy, and there is substantial evidence as well as an FDA approval to support these claims.
